Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be Catholic to audition?
While we welcome singers of all backgrounds, we require a deep respect for and understanding of the Catholic liturgy. Our mission is fundamentally liturgical, and all members must be comfortable participating in the sacred liturgy.
What if I don't have experience with Gregorian chant?
We provide training in chant notation and performance practice. However, some musical background and the ability to learn quickly are essential.
How much time commitment is required?
As a roster singer, you'll be called for specific liturgical services based on need and your availability. Currently this means primarily Sunday evening services at the Cathedral, with additional opportunities for special liturgies.
Do you provide music and resources?
Yes, we provide all necessary scores, chant books (Liber Usualis, Graduale Romanum), and learning resources. We offer comprehensive formation in Gregorian chant interpretation, Latin pronunciation, liturgical protocol, and Renaissance polyphony performance practice.
What should I prepare for my audition?
Choose a sacred piece that showcases your voice - a Latin motet, chant antiphon, or other liturgical work. Be prepared to sight-read simple chant notation and discuss your musical background.
What are the dress code and professional requirements?
Concert Black attire is required for all liturgical services. Members must arrive 30 minutes before service time, maintain professional conduct in sacred spaces, and handle all liturgical materials with reverence. We also require proper tax documentation and Independent Contractor status forms.
How does the roster system work?
We maintain a qualified roster of singers and call upon them for specific liturgical services as needed. There are currently no regular weekly rehearsals or standing commitments - singers respond to service opportunities based on their availability. This allows for maximum flexibility while ensuring we have qualified musicians for our liturgical needs.
How and when do I get paid?
Payment is processed monthly via QuickBooks. You'll receive $100 per service call, or $150 for calls that include a separate rehearsal. Additional opportunities for weddings, funerals, and special liturgies provide supplemental income as they become available.
What music will I be expected to perform?
Our repertoire centers on Gregorian chant (using Liber Usualis and Graduale Romanum) and Renaissance polyphony by composers like Palestrina, Victoria, and Byrd. We provide all scores and learning resources, plus comprehensive formation in chant interpretation, Latin pronunciation, and liturgical protocol.
What's the typical time commitment for preparation?
Individual preparation time varies by singer and familiarity with the repertoire. Most services require 2-4 hours of personal study. We provide recordings, practice tracks, and written guidance to support your preparation. Occasional sectional rehearsals may be called for major liturgies.
Our Mission
Gaudium Verum exists to serve the sacred liturgy through authentic musical prayer. We believe that Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony, when offered with reverence and technical excellence, become a true prayer that lifts hearts and minds to God. Our singers don't just perform—they participate in the Church's most ancient and beautiful musical traditions, helping to restore the rightful place of sacred music in Catholic worship.
